With the arrival of foreign delegations and intervention teams in Mursko Središće, preparations start for the MURA 2015 field exercise and the international conference on water management, as part of the MURA 2015 project.
The project “MURA 2015” started in January 2014 with the end date of 30 June 2015.
The project value is €484,354.67, with the European Commission co-financing rate of 85%.
The objectives of the project involve the need to harmonize with the requirements of the Water Framework Directive and EU Floods Directive, assessing the risks, improving prevention measures, response and relief at transnational level, establishing useful procedures through sharing of lessons learned and establishing an international protocol on early warning.
The project is implemented by the Consortium, which consists of the Republic of Croatia in the capacity of the project coordinator, represented by the National Protection and Rescue Directorate, as well as Slovenia, Hungary and Austria as members of the Consortium.
The “MURA 2015” exercise is based on a scenario of flooding of the river Mura, which is a potential common threat to Austria, Hungary, Slovenia and Croatia. Due to extremely high water levels of the rivers Drava and Mura, the state of emergency was proclaimed. In the border area near Varaždin, the embankment broke on the river Mura, causing flooding. It is estimated that there are about 300 households and 1,000 people affected in the Podturen area. Initial information is that there are 3 casualties and 15 people with minor and major injuries.
The exercise will take place on several locations along the river Mura in Međimurje and Varaždin County, with the participation of intervention teams from Croatia, Austria, Hungary and Slovenia. The exercise includes water rescue, CBRN accident caused by flooding, evacuation and reception of evacuated people in the joint camp.
The international conference on water management entitled “Joint river management and cross-border incident risks” will take place within the project and will bring together numerous guests and lecturers from Croatia, Austria, Hungary, Slovenia and the European Commission. The opening ceremony of the conference is tomorrow, 20 May 2015 at 9am at the Life class Sveti Martin hotel in Mursko Središće.
